China’s Deep Seek, a threat to the US?

China’s recently unveiled AI chatbot Deep Seek is causing some issues in the world’s economy. Deep Seek was first founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng and in just two years, they were able to produce a powerful yet dangerous AI chatbot, rivaling Open AI’s GPT models. What makes Deep Seek unique is its focus on using logical reasoning and chain-of-thought methods to respond to answers. Importantly, Deep Seek makes up 600 million parameters, making it one of the largest AI models in existence.

Deep seek is the result of China’s rapidly growing strides in AI, potentially threatening the US AI models. However, earlier this year, Deep Seek left over one million records, including system logs, user chat prompts, and API authentication tokens exposed, making them accessible to anyone who came across the database. This incident raised serious concerns about the company's data protection practices and highlighted vulnerabilities in handling sensitive user information.

Furthermore, the release of Deep Seek’s chatbot led to an 18 percent decrease in Nvidia's stock price. Nvidia is an American-based technology company that designs GPUs to train AI chatbots like Chat GPT and Google Gemini. The drop in their stock price hints at a looming AI competition between the US and China.
